Software Update Service Security Related Security for Windows

Software Update Service helper utility
SUSS (Software Update Services Standalone Tool) is a command-line application that allows you to control and manage your windows clients in your patch management architecture.

SUSS gives administrators excellent control on the update status of their windows clients in the enterprise.

Administrators can use SUSS to configure, troubleshoot, check, report and force your windows update clients from a central location !

The new WU client that ships with Windows XP service pack 2 does not allow you to connect to your local intranet SUS server for updates anymore, but instead uses the live internet WUS server with its delta updates.

SUSS actually detects the version of Windows Update client and if the version is newer than the old client, it forces the WU client into a legacy mode and thus allows the client to still connect to a company’s existing SUS server.
What’s New in This Release: [ read full changelog ]

· When updates are downloaded to clients, administrative users have the ability to decline the installation. Declined updates are never downloaded again to client machines, unless the decline update list is cleared. /the (-DU switch) allows SUS administrators to remotely remove the declined updates list. The (-DU switch) also provides support for a input hosts file (multiple remote hosts) and a output report file. (Comma-delimited [csv] format)
· Previous versions of SUSS required that the Remote Registry service be started for remote operations. SUSS 1.004 will now attempt to start the remote registry service (if stopped) on remote hosts on all of its switches. (-I, -C, -R, -E, -DU)
· The (-E switch [Force update check]) now provides support for a input hosts file (multiple remote hosts) and a output report file. (Comma-delimited [csv] format)
· The (-R switch [Reset to factory defaults]) now provides support for a input hosts file (multiple remote hosts) and a output report file. (Co…

First Response Security Related Security for Windows

First Response is a free, useful and reliable incident response management program
First Response is a free, useful and reliable incident response management program that is intended for information security staff, investigators and forensic professionals that respond to computer security incidents.

MANDIANT recognizes the importance of investigating any potential computer security incident, and we created MANDIANT First Response to foster diligent, effective and efficient response to these incidents.

First Response provides the ability to remotely collect the volatile data, file lists, registry information, event logs, running processes, running services, file time/date stamps and many other data sources to allow an organization to perform precision strike responses when an incident may have occurred. MANDIANT First Response promotes getting the right information into the hands of the right people quickly and intelligently.

The program contains a Command Console and a First Response Agent. The First Response Agent can be deployed on your infrastructure prior to an incident and run as a service for network-based acquisition of information, or run locally if you’re working with individual assets. The data collected by the First Response Agent includes the data used by responders to determine whether an incident occurred or not.

The Command Console provides an intuitive graphical user interface and report generating capability to allow your analysts to rapidly review, categorize and report on findings. Since all data is gathered, stored, and manipulated as compressed XML, you can easily use MANDIANT First Response data in conjunction with other information security products deployed in your environment. The ability to capture important system data and review it in an effective, centralized location exists today with MANDIANT First Response.
