KidsUnderground – Protect your children & protect your computer
KidsUnderground is a simple web browser designed for kids. The interface of many standard browsers is difficult for kids to use.
There are too many buttons and links, and navigating the browser can require literacy skills. Hitting the wrong key on the keyboard can also generate error messages and pop-up windows. Kids will often find that the game they are playing unexpectedly gets hidden behind a new window when they click on a button in error.
KidsUnderground solves these common problems by limiting access to the computer system. The software simplifies navigation by controlling input from the keyboard and mouse, and limiting the number of “clickable” buttons on the screen.
By simplifying input, we can prevent a child from entering key commands that would switch them away to another application. A child simply can’t use the mouse to accidentally reach another application that may be running behind it.
In KidsUnderground, all pages run in a single window. Pop-ups and multiple windows cannot be opened. Also, links are limited to those necessary to lead to the next activity. Links that lead outside of the site or to pages that are too complex to understand without reading skills are not included. Though this may make some links appear broken (not all links work), we find kids learn very quickly what works and what doesn’t.
The browser starts with a simple map where a child can make a choice of the website they want to open. The map includes the best and simplest web sites available on the web today. We currently have access to hundreds of activities that are simple to use, and we are constantly updating the map with new sites as they come along
