Protect is an original technology, which was developed within the ICZ Company. This internationally awarded product is suitable for the protection of data in large and mobile information systems.
Protect for Windows offers file protection and directory confidentiality and integrity with the help of a high-quality file encryption method.It can transparently encrypt any files or entire directories of a file system accessible from the workstation (hence on networks as well).
Encryption keys can be stored in user security tokens. After loading of keys from the security token, the user is granted a full access to the files, which were encrypted by this key.
Encryption algorithms
Protect for Windows uses the following encryption algorithms with the stated key lengths:
· WinCros II (80, 160 bits) – private algorithm of ICZ Company
· CAST (80, 128 bits) – public algorithm
· AES (128 bits) ? public algorithm
Protect supports on-the-fly encryption, which means that encryption and decryption take place automatically and transparently, in the operating system background. Once you have entered the encryption key for a given file or folder, all operations will proceed normally and you need not even notice that you are working with encrypted data.
Protect components
· Central Administration
Central Administration of Protect is a strong feature allowing administrators of large systems to mass install Protect and remotely configure and change all its settings with regard to user membership in network groups, it allows to keep an overview of the settings of an unlimited number of Protect installations. Encryption parameters on user workstations are remotely configurable using so called encryption templates.
· SetBox Application
The SetBox application is part of the Protect for Windows installation and is designed for user administration of security tokens. You will use this application for entering new encryption keys, deleting expired keys to/from the security tokens and for personification of these tokens.
· System policy
System policy is a set of rules, which permit or forbid access to Protect’s settings. Policy allows system administrators to determine which of Protect’s property sheets are available to the user from the Control Panel. System policy editor is a standard tool in the Windows system.

Limitations:
· You can’t use it with hardware security tokens

· Extended with new AES encryption algorithm.
· Encryption module is extended with ?Protected archive? of Protect system.
· Off-line encryption. This method of using Protect is no more supported beginning with the 3.x version. This doesn?t affect working with files created using this method, as well as auto-detection of such files. However it is no more possible to create encrypted files ?off-line? using standard user functions. For future only on-line (transparent) encryption and Protected archive will be supported.
· Protect is extended with balloon tip.
· Protect doesn?t allow to delete any file for the Recycle Bin. The only allowed operation is irreversible deleting.
· The control is simplified and unified.
· Protect doesn?t support the !folders (the folders that did allow access to the encrypted files in their encrypted form without on-line encryption).
