LocatePC – Free Stolen Computer Recovery Software for Windows
LocatePC will send a secret e-mail message from your computer that may help you recover it if gets stolen.. Requires POP email account.

Set up LocatePC to send email to an address you can access without your PC. This could be a web-based email address (like Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, etc.), a friend’s or relative’s email address, your work or home email address, etc.

For most of the above POP providers, when you’re setting up LocatePC, as soon as you enter the POP account email address, LocatePC will automatically enter the correct server address, port, and user name.

LocatePC doesn’t work through proxy servers, so it can’t be used on most corporate networks (it will warn you if you try to install it on a PC that uses a proxy).

LocatePC only works if a user is logged on to the PC. That means your PC must let someone log in without a password (on XP you can create a user account without a password or enable the Guest account, and then protect your files: log in to your original account, right-click My Documents, click Properties, click Sharing, and check ‘Make this folder private’).

Since LocatePC is software, it won’t work if your PC’s hard drive is bypassed. To help prevent this, some PCs can be set up in their BIOS to require a password before they’ll boot from anything other than their hard drive.

Here are some key features of “LocatePC”:

· Your computer may be traced and recovered using info in the message, including PC’s IP address
· Hidden operation – no icons, popups, or copies of emails
· Password protected console window shows status – opens with hot key

Requirements:

· POP email account, needed for LocatePC to send email.
· LocatePC can only send email if a user is logged in to the PC, and the PC is connected to the Internet.
· Not supported: HTTP proxy servers, mail servers that use SSL or SPA or IMAP (including Gmail and Hotmail), or email accounts that only work when the PC is connected to a specific ISP
